About Me

Me… more recently

Picture
My life has become split. Again.

At first I was a wife and a teacher.

Then I was a mother and… a little bored.

Then I was a mother again, still a wife, still a lover of Christ, but also a children's director at church, and still I had more dreams. I got back into shape and focused a lot on health and fitness. But that wasn't the end. I was barely in my 30s!

Then came the books. I started writing and just couldn't give it up. Getting publishing contracts was a dream come true, but becoming my own publicist was a nightmare. It's all a part of life, however. Dreams and nightmares balance out.

But then came my newest determination - saving the life of my youngest child. She nearly died when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, and my husband and I (with much help and prayer from our family and friends) have been trying to save her every day since then. It's been such a difficult road, that we can focus on little else some days. This is the reason that many of my blog posts and Facebook rants center around our life with T1D. Until we can get a better hold on this disease, I'll continue researching, learning, and doing all I can to make my daughter comfortable. Until there's a cure and life can find a new semblance of normalcy, we will not know rest.

When I started running (again, after having kids), I set a goal of running a half marathon. I trained regularly until I could do it. I ran the Hershey Half in 2012. I'm done now. I still run, but rarely more than 8 miles at a time. No marathon goals. I hope this is how life with T1D will be. We will train and train until we cross the finish line. When there's a cure, we can keep any healthy habits we developed, but quit the obsession. I'll be looking forward to that next phase.

Me!

Alright.  Me. Easy enough.

Wait.  No it isn't!  What do you want to know?

Everything?  OK.

I was born in Philadephia and grew up in the suburbs thereof.  As a child, I was into art and friends, sweets and shopping.  And I hated reading.  My grades were excellent, though teachers complained that I did not write complete sentences or explain my answers very well.

As a teenager, my grades remained great, even though I had now also gained interest in sports, people-pleasing, God, and poetry.  Now I had softball and cheerleading, friends and youth group.  So any creativity I extended had to be brief.

College was great, and a degree in elementary education made me read more.  The Freshmen Fifteen made me run more.  And though this was where I met my husband, Jeremy, we did not begin a relationship until I graduated.  So, graduation led to a teaching job (6th grade that first year) and a relationship led to a marriage in 1997.  A few years later, I moved to 2nd grade, and then down to kindergarten. What next? You guessed it.  Out of teaching to care for my own babies.  I now am the happy mama to Hannah, Christian, and Audrey.

The funniest thing started happening toward the end of my teaching career.  I began writing children's books.  I felt I had some great ideas and liked keeping it short.  Another way of keeping it short? Contributing short devotions to God Stories. (You'll find me in vol. 3-7 thus far.)  As my children grew taller, my writing grew longer.  And so did the time I spent running.  They go together.  Running for hours gives one a lot of time to think.  What else are you going to do?  So I listened.  What did God want me to write?  Well, start the Angelmen series, and you will find out!  Happy reading to you!

Other Random Stuff:

Personality Type: Definitely Type A- I love lists (the cross-off kind) and being organized.
Physical Deficiencies: Slight brain tumor, crazy-odd seizure issue, and I don't hear very well.
Physical Supremacies: My vision is 20/15 and my body heals and recovers quicker than many others.
Favorite Color: purple (the shade of plum, especially)
Favorite Number: 8 (and odd numbers drive me crazy to a fault)
Favorite Food: ice cream (so many different kinds, usually with "stuff"), cheesecake, sometimes donuts
Favorite Activities: running, cycling, racquetball, volleyball, and all kinds of other exercise
Favorite Sports: NFL football (Eagles, Packers), MLB Baseball (Phillies, Giants)

Favorite Books: The Bible, To Kill a Mockingbird
Favorite Movies: Adventure movies, especially with superheros, and Sci-Fi
Favorite TV Show: LOST (nothing since has even come close)
Favorite Music: Anything but country! (I love hard rock, alternative, classic rock, jazz, hymns, worship, & so on)
Favorite Animals: cats and otters (one because they snuggle while I sit, the other is quite entertaining at the zoo)
