A different kind of Top Ten today. I'm splitting into half recommendation and half warning. I've got 10 good ones, and a few less of the less desirable workout songs.
So, why do you need these songs? Because it's October. What a lovely month! The weather here in the these Mid-Atlantic states is perfect, no matter what you prefer. So it's time to get outside. A great time to start running or walking.
I'm giving you a "starter kit" of songs to put on your iPod as you start your exercise routine. Because when you run with music, you don't always notice that you are exercising. But just as songs can motivate you to move, some can subliminally (or flat out) tell you to stop. So I will help you out by giving you a few to avoid.
Some of the songs are on the list made it because of the tempo of the music, but most of these were added to one list or another because of lyrics, and I have listed them with the title. These are ALL songs on my iPod, and so I really do like all of these songs, no matter which list they made. But sometimes, it's hard to press on when a song literally tells you, "Give up. Time to stop running."
So here you go - for planning or for laughing:
Best Exercise Songs:
10. Cray Button (Family Force 5)"I ain't going nowhere, let the roof cave in
'Bout to blow up something, here goes nothing
Watch me hit the cray button"
9. Gloryland (Audio Adrenaline)
"If you want to come with me there's room
There are no legal limits
There's always room for one more soul
So why not come and get it
I want to ride this train to Gloryland"
8. Move (Thousand Foot Krutch)
"Move and show me what you can do
When you step into the circle and shake like we do
Move when you just can't take it
And move if you just feel like breaking it"
8. Fire it Up (Thousand Foot Krutch)
"I'm in love with the feeling
Of pressure to the ceiling
We come with intention
To face the opposition."
7. Bring Em Out (Hawk Nelson)
"Pump up your fist
If you twist like this
'Til the lights go out
Bring em out! Bring em out!"
6. Finally Home (Mercy Me)
"When I finally make it home
When I finally make it home"
6. Escape (Newsboys)
"But if you get up, get up, get up
You can break away
If you get up, get up, get up
Nothing can overtake
5. I'm Alive (Peter Furler)
When I chased one more mirage
Til I was tired and parched again
You gave me one more cup to fill
And sent me one more desert rain
I'm alive, I'm on fire
And my spirit burns with desire"
4. F-I-R-E (Press Play)
Burning like I'm flammable
Call my soul an animal
I can't help but let this ba ba beat
Move me like I'm outta control
Got a little bit of funk with a whole lot of heat
Burn up the track with a little bit me
I spit fire, you just breath - I desire, you just need"
3. Bring It On (Everyday Sunday)
"Bring it on, bring it on
If youve got something to say, then say it loud
Bring it on, bring it on
Were bringing it for God, so bring on the crowd"
2. Smack Down (Thousand Foot Krutch)
"Come on, let's rip it, let's push that limit
If you don't feel pain then you can't be winnin', come on
They said I wouldn't be nothin', I said stop frontin'
Put the pedal to the metal 'cause the storm is comin'"
1. Eye On it (toby Mac)
"Reachin' for what lies ahead, I got my eye on it
I see my sweat hit the ground
I put my foot in the block
This is the race of my life
And I can’t wait for this shot
‘Cause I can feel the wind at my back
Chest is pumpin' like a heart attack
Feet are moving and my mind is locked
Pressin' on with everything I got"
Not The Most Motivating Exercise Songs (even though I like them!):
5. Rescue (Newsboys)
"They shackle our feet
4. Slumber (NeedToBreathe)
"Days they force you
Back under those covers
Lazy mornings they multiply"
3. Restless (Switchfoot)
"I am the sea on a moonless night
Calling falling, slipping tides
I am the leaky, dripping pipes
The endless, aching drops of lights"
2. Worn (Tenth Avenue North)
"I’m Tired I’m worn
My heart is heavy
From the work it takes to keep on breathing"
and the worst song to listen to while running...
1. Surrender (Third Day)
"You better give up, gotta stop running
It's the end of the line, it's time to surrender
Hands up, turn it around
Fall to the ground, are you gonna surrender?"
Yes, I couldn't come up 10 non-motivating songs. But, did you notice I put in 2 number 6's and 2 number 8's on the list of best songs? And since that STILL leaves me short, here are several bonuses.
Honorable Mentions (for good songs):
Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas)
Take Me In (Ashes Remain)
(Superchick) Great music for girls!
Gonna Make You Sweat (C+C Music Factory)
Monster, Rise, Circus for a Psycho (Skillet)
Enjoy your next workout!
Because I love even numbers and lists!
